Psalm 139:1-12

Search Me, O God, and Know My Heart

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, you have ^(A)searched me and known me!
²You ^(B)know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you ^(C)discern my thoughts from afar.
³You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
⁴Even before a word is on my tongue,
    behold, O Lord, ^(D)you know it altogether.
⁵You ^(E)hem me in, behind and before,
    and ^(F)lay your hand upon me.
⁶^(G)Such knowledge is ^(H)too wonderful for me;
    it is high; I cannot attain it.

⁷^(I)Where shall I go from your Spirit?
    Or where ^(J)shall I flee from your presence?
⁸^(K)If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
    ^(L)If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
⁹If I take the wings of the morning
    and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
¹⁰even there your hand shall ^(M)lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me.
¹¹If I say, ^(N)“Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and the light about me be night,”
¹²^(O)even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light with you.

Jacob's Dream

¹⁰Jacob left ^(A)Beersheba and went toward ^(B)Haran. ¹¹And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. ¹²And he ^(C)dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder^[a] set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, ^(D)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! ¹³And behold, ^(E)the Lord stood above it^[b] and said, ^(F)“I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. ^(G)The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. ¹⁴Your offspring shall be like ^(H)the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and ^(I)your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ¹⁵Behold, ^(J)I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and ^(K)will bring you back to this land. For I will ^(L)not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” ¹⁶Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is ^(M)in this place, and I did not know it.” ¹⁷And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
